Psychiatric prison escapee recaptured robbing a jewelry store

A man who escaped from his psychiatric prison escort while on leave on Thursday has been arrested trying to rob a jewelry store in Rotterdam.

The 34-year-old ran off on Thursday evening but was recaptured on Friday morning. He was armed with a knife and threatened staff but no-one was hurt, news agency ANP said.
Neither police or public prosecution department would say why the man had been sent to a secure psychiatric prison (tbs), ANP said. Nor were any more details given about the arrest.
Last October, junior justice minister Fred Teeven told MPs 37 people on leave from psychiatric prison had run off in 2011, most of whom were on leave without an escort.
Some 50,000 periods of leave are extended to psychiatric prisoners every year, meaning only a tiny proportion go wrong, Teeven said.
