Princess Máxima is voted 'dumb fur wearer' of the year

Monday 07 January 2013

Princess Máxima has been voted 'Dom Bontje' (dumb fur wearer) of 2012 for wearing a jacket with a raccoon fur hood.

The princess and her daughter Amalia both wore the jackets at the televised arrival of Sinter Klaas in the Netherlands last November.

Almost 20,000 people took part in the online vote on the website of anti-fur lobby group Bont voor Dieren. Máxima, who also won the title in 2004, took two-thirds of the vote.

Bont voor Dieren says raccoon fur is largely produced in China under very poor conditions. Dutch companies such as Gaastra, Nickelson, Airforce and Moscow use raccoon fur in their clothing, the organisation says.

Dom Bontje is a word play on the phrase domme blondje, or dumb blonde.

I voted for her. A deserved winner. The other contestants were some chavs that probably don't know any better. Also there were a few celebs who promised to stop wearing fur because of this. But as long as real fur is cheaper then the fake alternative I fear there is still a long way to go.

Until we all become vegetarian and no longer buy any Chinese products, surely we can think of more worthwhile causes . .

Much ado about nothing. When will there be an uprising about leather? If raccoons were the superior species they'd be wearing us.

Princess Máxima is voted 'dumb fur wearer' of the year. Birds of a feather flock together. With her husband she is in good company.

I look forward to the day when issues like this are resolved and we can all concentrate on making things better for the Humans on this planet!

Talk about setting examples, indeed Dumb!

Shame on Máxima. That fur trim around her neck represents horror and suffering. These wild animals are kept in cramped cages, unable to dig in the dirt or run. They are electrocuted or gassed to avoid damaging the skins. Nobel Prize laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer described the treatment of animals by humans as "an eternal Treblinka”. Fur looks outdated, not elegant or regal. Only animals look beautiful in fur. People look gross, vain and dumb. Maxima lives in the Netherlands, not the North Pole; even if she did, synthetic material is warmer than fur. Dutch parliament banned fur farms. Maxima, as princess, set an example of compassion. Animals cannot speak for themselves. If we don’t, who will?

any body feeling sorry for the racoons should get their attics and/roofs riDutchNewspped up by a bunch of those ratty animals

Humans have been using animal coat for clothing purpose for a long time. There is nothing inherently wrong with that. Animals exist to fulfill human needs first and foremost (else we could just hunt them to extinction)

... "KLAP VAN DE MOLEN" - forget about fussing over any Fur Coat. All our efforts and prayers should be poured into Prince Friso! Hopefully one day, Princess Maxima and Prince Friso can share a Heineken/Jenever together. With loving best wishes, Our Prince.

Why worry about the raccoons? During World War II Goering authorized their release from a German fur farm, and since then they've spread all over, becoming pests. They are native to North America, not to Europe. I hope Maxima inspires other people to start wearing their fur, thus creating an incentive to shoot them.

Real fur or leather does not compare with synthethic crap.

'Animals exist to fulfill human needs first and foremost'________ Pardon? You don't believe yourself to be an animal then? If not, what ARE you? A god? I can't believe the arrogance...

I am shocked at the remarks from people about fur wearing. I thought dutch people had a better society than Britain, but they are way behind on Animal Rights.

By tina rickards | January 8, 2013 9:13 PM

@woods: we are superior to all other animals, since we can control nature like no other animal can.

By A.L. | January 8, 2013 11:04 PM

One of the things about the Netherlands is how prevalent real fur is. It's everywhere. Even the US is nowhere NEAR as bad, and their animal welfare record is shocking. Makes me miss the UK, where seeing real fur is a shocker and everyone with half a brain can see how vile it is.

By bobbianderson | January 9, 2013 12:14 PM

If you seriously think humans can control nature, AL, you are deluded. And since the human animal is the only one which kills its own kind out of greed and avarice, rather than necessity, I hardly think we're superior, either.

By woods | January 9, 2013 12:41 PM

This is stupid. The same people who are insulting the Princess for wearing racoon fur are probably wearing leather shooes and leather belts, and probably use skin, hair and nail products tested on animals. It's not like she was wearing a full length fur wrap made from the pelts of Siberian Tigers. Af far as I know racoons are far from being endangered. Get a freaking life people.

By Faust | January 9, 2013 9:41 PM

Faust, the difference with leather shoes etc, is that the rest of the animal is utilised as well. It's a by-product. Raccoon steak anyone? And most so-called beauty products stopped animal testing many moons ago.

By woods | January 10, 2013 11:13 AM

Are you racoons lovers serious? It's obvious that some of you have never had any contact with racoons. You have never had to pick up the remains of chickens or cats killed by them or had to shoot a rabid one on your property threatening your kids and pets. Racoons are some of the biggest klootzaks in the animal kingdom. I wouldn't wear their pelts but wouldn't shed any tears for them either. Oh, could a few more brits tell us how superior the UK is again? That never gets old.

Ah another classic case of Dutch burning issues evasion, save the people before the bugs, and does this kingdom have no Les Majeste laws of any sort, from the outside looking in the only thing that keeps The kingdom of the Netherlands sensible in any way is the Royal family disregard that and their furs and its a bunch of weed smoking, alcoholic, vulgar bunch of peasants....any signs of a civil state were evaded by this award henceforth
