France backs Dutch finance minister to head euro group

Monday 21 January 2013

France has now given its formal backing to Dutch finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem’s candidature as chairman of the influential euro group.

French finance minister Pierre Moscovici told broadcaster TV5 on Sunday France now accepted Dijsselbloem’s position, saying he hoped the Dutchman will continue the strategy adopted by outgoing chairman Jean-Claude Juncker.

Moscovici had earlier expressed doubts about Dijsselbloem, and called on him to outline his vision of the eurozone and the euro.

The appointment is expected to be finalised at today’s meeting of eurozone finance ministers.

When did we elect these people?

@by a vote: We Did! We elect our government, our government appoints a finance minister, the finance minister automatically becomes part of the informal group of 'finance ministers from countries using the Euro'. We abbreviate this to 'Euro Group'. All the finance ministers arrange amongst themselves a 'president' who then sits in on the 'Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs' ensuring our government's wishes are represented in European Economic Affairs, and the Euro's future.

Is EU being run like a central government in Russia or China? THey just decided among themselves who should head what?

@jaycee: I hope this was tinged with sarcasm.

There's a few too many appointments in that process and not enough democracy. This is the failure of the EU, and what they need to fix. But they won't because it's too good a gravy train to get off once your first class seat has been paid for out of their expense accounts.
