Eindhoven mayor Rob van Gijzel has called on the parents of five Belgian teenagers caught on security camera beating up a 22-year-old man to encourage their offspring to ‘voluntarily extradite themselves’ to the Netherlands.
The three Dutch suspects all reported voluntarily to Eindhoven police after the video was shown in a television crime show. But the five others have refused to come to the Netherlands to face charges and now face extradition proceedings.
A Belgian court must now decide if the five should be sent over the border but it is unclear when that decision will be taken.
The three Dutch teenagers are in custody. Two of them face charges of attempted manslaughter.
The apparently unprovoked attack took place on January 4. The 22-year-old victim was hit and kicked by several of the eight-strong group after they marched down the street on ‘a war footing’. He suffered severe concussion and injuries to his mouth and jaw.
According to some reports, the youths attacked the man when he intervened as they kicked bikes.
