Twelve days of continuous frost officially ended on Saturday evening, when the temperature at the De Bilt weather station rose to 0.4 Celsius.

Some 80,000 people took part in organised skating routes on Saturday, as skaters flocked to take advantage of the last day of good ice.

The lowest temperature recorded during the cold snap was -18 Celsius in the Veluwe village of Herwijnen on the night of January 15.

Weather forecasters say the temperature could reach as high as 11 Celsius on Tuesday and Wednesday.
