As rush hour gears up, motorists warned about slippery roads

Although most roads have now been cleared of snow, motoring organisations are warning motorists to beware of icy roads during Wednesday’s morning rush hour.

Fresh snow overnight in Limburg will add to the problems, the transport ministry said. Some 500 ministry grit lorries have been salting main roads overnight.
‘It can be extremely slippery because of frozen snow or the frost and that means drivers should take extra care,’ a spokesman for the transport ministry’s roads department said. ‘You may think the road is clear because you don’t see any snow but it can be very slippery.’
Fewer trains
Dutch Rail (NS) is continuing to operate reduced services on Wednesday, to offset the likely effect of any breakdowns.
The heavy frost is expected to continue into the weekend.
Schiphol airport reported some 40 cancelled flights on Tuesday because of the snow but services are now back to normal.
Tuesday’s morning rush hour jams reached a record 1,000 km.
