PostNL expects to deliver 160 million Christmas cards

Monday 17 December 2012

Postal delivery group PostNL said on Monday it expects to deliver some 160 million Christmas cards over the holiday period.

On peak days, some 22 million items of post will be delivered, compared with 13 million on a normal work day, Post NL said.

Research published by PostNL earlier this month showed the Dutch send an average of 40 Christmas cards per household - more than any other European country.

Nevertheless, online Christmas greetings are depressing the sale of traditional cards. In 1999, 210 million cards were sent.

I received a Christmas card at my home in Zeeland. It was addressed to somebody who lives in a town at the very northern point of The Netherlands. Only the house number was right. I gave it back to the postman, not sure what happened to it after. Moral of this story: not all of the 160 millions cards will be delivered to where they are intended!

The other 100 million they will just heave into some canal like they did with mine a few years ago. The secretary was most annoyed.

We had to drive all over Amstelveen last weekend looking for a post box to post our overseas xmas cards. They have put the fireworks blockers on them, and some of our cards didn't fit through the tiny slot. We checked over 30 boxes before we found one not done. Bizarrely almost all of them was only blocked for "overige postcodes". What's that all about?

Anne, it wouldn't have done any harm posting it in Streekpost if it fitted in there, it'd just have taken a day extra to arrive. ;)

They expect to deliver 160 million cards? Probably means that 320 million cards are sent, considering the current pitful state of PostNL.
