Firework sale starts

Friday 28 December 2012

Fireworks officially go on sale to the public today, in the run up to the New Year celebrations.

Fireworks may only be officially sold by designated dealers three shopping days before December 31, but there is a large unofficial network and many people also buy their fireworks abroad, particularly in Belgium.

By law, fireworks may only be set off between 10.00 hours on December 31 and 02.00 hours on January 1.

However, a hotline set up by left-wing green party GroenLinks, which would like to see public sales banned, has received over 19,000 reports of firework nuisance so far this month.

Experts expect total official firework sales to top €75m this year, an increase of €5m on 2011.

just spent half the night up due to people throwing illegal fireworks against the steel shutters of our business which is setting the smoke/mist alarm system off we then need more than an hour to clear the premises of the mist and reset the alarms and go to bed - just nodding-off and it happens again - do the police come ??

When will the government see sense and ban fireworks for private sale!? Just last night I was attacked by some one throwing a firework at me. The detonation rendered me half blind and deaf. These "people" dropped it from their balcony and I was easily able to provide the police with and address. Ban the fireworks, brainless idiots cannot be trusted with explosives.

"By law, fireworks may only be set off between 10.00 hours on December 31 and 02.00 hours on January 1." So there is yet another law totally ignored and not enforced. This country is pathetic!
