New cabinet cleans up pending legislation list, drops 14 draft laws

Tuesday 27 November 2012

The new government has ditched 14 pieces of draft legislation drawn up by the previous administration, the Volkskrant reported on Tuesday.

The big clean up includes an end to plans to increase court fees, force judges to impose minimum sentences and reduce the number of MPs and senators.

The new cabinet has also formally ditched plans to make people renounce their original nationality when they become Dutch and to require all new Dutch nationals to earn at least the minimum wage and show they have at least two years' work experience.

As an expat who would like dual nationality I'm thrilled that the the new government is scrapping plans to make us choose! I would never give up my US citizenship in order to become exclusively Dutch but I do live here, participate and contribute to this society in may ways (taxes, volunteering, philanthropy ) so I should be able to receive the same benefits as any citizen. I hope the xenophobic attitude dies down and the Dutch realize that they are becoming a moziac of many cultures and should embrace the diversity!

It's nice to hear that they are "cleaning house" but what is next?

Cleaning house... hardly... its more like a situation when you move into the flat when the previous tenants left a load of rubbish everwhere so you bagged it up and left it on the street.

A little late of a reply but merry chtarsmis. I haven't seen you around for a while, I'm assuming you have been very busy. It was the only gift I got aside from a bag of cookies from my roommate.
