Dutch Waffen SS member aged 91 charged with 1944 murder

Wednesday 28 November 2012

A Dutch national who joined the Nazi Waffen SS and now lives in Germany has been charged with the 1944 murder of a Dutch resistance fighter, according to international news agency AP.

Siert Bruins, 91, is accused of killing resistance leader Aldert Klaas Dijkema, who was shot dead near the German border.

Bruins, who now has German nationality, was convicted of murdering two Dutch Jews in 1980 and served eight years in jail. He was sentenced to death in absentia by the Dutch courts in 1949 which was later commuted to life imprisonment.

Efforts to have him brought back to the Netherlands failed because Germany does not extradite its own citizens.

A court in the German town of Hagen will now determine if the case should go to trial.

If this criminal just happens to be "found" one morning in Den Haag then they could put him in prison without all this extradition nonsense.

Not much to say, other than what has taken so long? The Dutch government should never have relented in their efforts to bring him to justice, either here or in Germany.

@Quince, Hitler made a law during the war that foreigners who joined the SS automatically got German citizenship. That law is never abolished. Germany doesn't extradite it's citizens. The Dutch government tried to bring several Dutch SS members to justice, but none of these efforts succeeded because of German law.

He should be sentenced to live out his days in the Anne Frank huis in the Joordan. Obviously a person who never got it....an example of why educating people about crimes against humanity and minorities is still as relevant as ever.
