Sara Lee neglected Douwe Egberts, says DE chief executive

The amount of coffee in Senseo coffee pods was deliberately reduced to cut costs, by the company’s US owner Sara Lee, the Volkskrant reports on Saturday.

The claim was made by Michiel Herkemij, chief executive of coffee and tea group DE Master Blenders, which was hived off by Sara Lee earlier this year.
In the interview Herkemij says Sara Lee ‘neglected and ignored’ the coffee operations. ‘They made a lot of money… In the last years they took coffee out of the pods. There was 7.5 grammes, they took half a gramme out.’
The new company has restored coffee volumes to their original level, he told the paper.
