MPs remain concerned about winter rail chaos

MPs from all parties are expressing concern about potential winter chaos on the railways ahead of a meeting with infrastructure minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen later on Tuesday.

Dutch rail (NS) and network operator ProRail already announced the use of a preventative timetable based on weather forecasts to deal with snow and ice this winter.
Many MPs are asking if running fewer trains is a suitable solution. Christian Democrat Sander de Rouwe wants to know how much longer NS and ProRail need before cutting the service is no longer necessary when it snows.
Socialist MPs say the annual rail chaos cannot be solved as long as NS and ProRail are separate companies and are arguing for a merger of the two.
Schultz has already said she is confident NS and ProRail are doing everything to avoid the chaotic scenes of last winter.
