Minimum wage for adults rises €13.20 a month

Friday 19 October 2012

The minimum wage for people aged 23 and over will go up €13.20 to €1,469.40 a month on January 1, 2013.

The rise stems from the official link between the minimum wage and wage rises in the collective sector.

The rise means the over 23s must earn a minimum of €8.48 an hour for a 40-hour week.

Youth minimum pay rates have also risen - from next year an 18-year-old must earn at least €3.86 an hour, a rise of four cents. The pay for 15-year-olds will rise two cents an hour to €2.54.

Does this mean in hand or before tax

Try to work out first how much you get to keep, after paying the bills, pocket money leftovers? I would consider the rise to be very good if I had come to NL from a low wage country.. :)

Wow. Just wow. No wonder kids get fired once they reach a certain age. The last time I made that much per hour was in the 1970s!!

The ageism in this country blows me away...

Of course its before tax

The figures are before tax.

Let's not forget that the real salaries are actually going down, since the inflation rate (2%) is higher than the raises.

An 18 year old earning that much is laughable. Is there any wonder why Albert Heijn employees are talking and texting at work? They don't care, and I don't blame them! It's the reason I made the switch to local grocers for as much of my groceries as possible.

@Max: "local grocers" are more expensive and have very short hours, don't open on Sundays etc.

All this brouhaha about "buying local" is great - until you realize local stores have limited selection, don't offer things like coupons and bonus, automatic payment with self-scanning, don't open late or on Sundays etc.

@CW - You're right - my son got fired from his job (or 'let go' as it was put) a couple of months ago when he hit 23.
