GroenLinks chairwoman and board follow leader Sap and resign

The chairwoman and rest of the board of left-wing green political party GroenLinks resigned on Saturday, a day after party leader Jolande Sap quit.

Chairwoman Heleen Weening told a GroenLinks meeting in Utrecht on Saturday she is responsible for Sap’s decision to stand down. ‘I hope the party can unite, without baggage from the past, and make a new start,’ Weening said.
Sap resigned on Friday after it emerged she had lost the support of the party’s board. GroenLinks support collapsed at last month’s general election and the party has just four seats in the current parliament.
The party was hurt by its support for the Dutch police training mission in Afghanistan, the spring budget agreement and internal divisions over the leadership.
Sap took over the leadership job from Femke Halsema in December 2010.
