Dutch pension system no longer best in the world: Mercer

Denmark has overtaken the Netherlands in a ranking of 18 of the world’s best pension systems by human resources consultancy Mercer.

‘The Dutch system is beginning to crack because things have been promised which cannot come true,’ Tim Burggraaf of Mercer told Nos television. ‘In the Netherlands we promise that pensions will reach a given level but there is not enough money to make this a reality.’
In Denmark, people are aware of how much they contribute to their company or private pension and know how much they will get.
The Netherlands will start moving to what is known as a defined contribution system in 2014 as part of a package of pension system reforms.
It is the first time Denmark has been included in the research and the method of assessing pension funds has also changed, Burggraaf pointed out.
