Citizens initiatives will invest €1bn in energy production: report

Monday 15 October 2012

The Dutch will invest €1bn by 2020 in projects to generate electricity at a local level, according to energy research group ECN.

At the moment there are some 300 citizens’ initiatives to generate sustainable power and their number is set to grow significantly, the ECN report said. The report was drawn up on behalf of the Financieele Dagblad.

The investment will also help the Netherlands reach sustainable energy targets. By 2020, some 14% of Dutch energy is supposed to come from renewable sources. At the moment, the figure is just 4%.

Reaching the target will require investment of tens of billions of euros, ECN said.

I was recently in the Netherlands, and was totally impressed by how far the country was ahead of Canada and the U.S. in the area of green technology. Bicycles, electric, hi-speed trains, solar panels on homes, and an abundance of turbine windmills. All I can say, is "well done Holland".

How come we never received any leaflets to install solar panel on our roofs? Hope the funds are not used to enrich some individual indirectly.

@ufo, this is a list of sustainable initiatives from all over the country. Maybe you can joint one of them.

My energy provider sent me an unexpected present, a solar charger worth about €20, that can charge cellphones & other small apps.

It is still packed in the box, just like the Dutch sun..NOTHING!! :P

A mini windmill charger would be of far more useful!

@pepe: Thanx for that amazing list ! I've decided to join a solar collective ..

Lets hope that Diederik Samson's amendment will ensure that the solar collective effort takes off in a large way here !!
