Arrest warrant for Dutch Farc rebel temporarily suspended

Arrest warrants for Dutch woman Tanja Nijmeijer, who joined Colombia’s rebel group Farc 10 years ago, have been suspended temporarily, news agency ANP reports on Monday.

The suspension is to allow Nijmeijer to attend peace talks between Farc and the Colombian government in Cuba.
If the talks break down, the arrest warrants for Nijmeijer and number of other Farc members will be reactivated, senior public prosecutor Eduardo Montealegre is quoted as saying.
There are two warrants out for Nijmeijer; one from the Colombian governament and an extradition request from the US. The second warrant relates to Nijmeijer’s involvement in the abduction of three Americans.
The peace talks, which kicked off in Oslo last week, are due to resume in Havana on November 15, ANP says.

Diaries

Nijmeijer, who graduated in Spanish from Groningen University in 2002, hit the headlines in 2007 when her diaries were found after government troops attacked a rebel camp. In the diaries, she was very critical of her life with the FARC movement.
In 2010, she was thought to have been killed in a government raid, but that later turned out not to be the case.
In 2011, she gave a television interview explaining her full commitment to the cause, which was broadcast by the Nos.
