Amsterdam mayor calls for solution for failed asylum seekers

Amsterdam mayor Eberhard van der Laan has called on the government to find a permanent solution to the problem of failed asylum seekers who cannot return home, Nos television reports.

Van der Laan made the comments during a visit to parliament on Tuesday to talk about the camp in Osdorp where 40 failed asylum seekers have been living for the past few weeks.
The group have lost their right to stay in the Netherlands but cannot be returned home either, Nos television says. Failed asylum seekers only have the right to accommodation if they work with the authorities towards their return.
‘Working towards a solution, rather than working towards a return, should be the condition for accommodation,’ Van der Laan said. ‘That is the only way out of this Catch 22 solution.’
There have been a number of similar protest camps this year.
How would you solve the Catch 22? Have your say using the comment box below.
