Shell Arctic drilling protests lead to 18 arrests

Police arrested 18 Greenpeace campaigners on Friday morning who were involved in protests against Shell’s decision to start test drilling in the Arctic.

The arrests were made in Alphen aan den Rijn, The Hague, Apeldoorn and Amersfoort where activists were attempting to disable fuel pumps at Shell petrol stations during rush hour.
Greenpeace said its campaigners had managed to disrupt sales at some 70 petrol stations after using padlocks to stop the fuel guns being used. Fire officers were brought in to cut off the locks, Nos television said.
The environmental group says the test drilling could prove disastrous to the fragile Pole area.
Shell described the Greenpeace action as ‘unsafe and without respect’. ‘It is annoying and we regret the nuisance to our customers,’ a spokeswoman said. ‘Greenpeace has the right to disagree with us but we are worried the safety of our customers and staff may be compromised by this sort of action.’
