Roermond drug dealer arrests soar after cannabis card

There have been 130 arrests for drugs dealing in the southern city of Roermond since its cannabis cafes were turned into private members clubs in May.

In the same period last year, 10 people were picked up on dealing charges.
The figures were made public during an information evening about the new system, which requires locals to register as cannabis users. All cannabis clubs in the country will be turned into members-only clubs in January next year.
The number of reports of street dealing and drugs-related nuisance have gone up from 105 in 2011 to 262 this year.

On Tuesday, Rotterdam’s mayor Achmed Aboutaleb said the cannabis club membership card does not work and will never work. Amsterdam is also opposed to its introduction.
It will be up to the new coalition government to decide whether or not to go ahead with the system nationwide. The ruling VVD is in favour, but Labour is opposed. The two parties are currently in talks on forming a new alliance.
