‘IT sector hit by job losses and skill shortages’

The Dutch IT sector is being hit by a wave of redundancies as orders slow and more technical jobs are shifted to low wage countries, Nos television reports on Friday.

The Financieele Dagblad reported earlier Getronics and Capgemini are cutting 600 jobs between them and said other firms are also planning to reduce staffing levels.
IT sector association ICT-office told Nos an increasing number of technical jobs are moving overseas. But at the same time, the Netherlands is being affected by a shortage of workers with high-value experience and skills, the organisation said.
Ngi, which also represents IT companies, told Nos many firms are now using freelance technicians, who are cheaper than large companies. This means larger firms need to rethink their strategies because in the long term they will be unable to compete, Ngi said.
