Healthcare costs 15% of GDP

Spending on health and other care services accounts for 14.9% of Dutch gross domestic product, according to calculations by the Paris-based OECD and national statistics office CBS and quoted by the Volkskrant.

This is a higher ratio than any other of the 34 OECD countries, the Volkskrant said.

Over the past 10 years, total spending on healthcare has gone up 71.4%, the figures show. In 2001, total spending on care services was €52.5bn. That figure reached €90bn last year - equivalent to €5,392 per head of the population.

Traditional healthcare accounts for 11.9% of GDP, with nursing homes and home services accounting for a further 3%, the paper said.
