Give all police officers a taser, says justice minister

Sunday 30 September 2012

All police officers in the Netherlands should be equipped with a taser - a hand-held apparatus that gives people an electric shock - justice minister Ivo Opstelten is quoted as saying at the weekend.

Opstelten said the experience of special arrest teams who had been using tasers is positive and further research will show if the weapon can be used by all police officers.

The media reports point out use of the electro-shock weapon is controversial and that police unions have expressed doubts about the taser. Amnesty International has also warned about the risks attached to tasers and called for more research.

Dutch police officers are currently equipped with a hand gun, a truncheon and pepper spray, news agency ANP said.

Would the taser be a useful addition to Dutch police equipment? Have your say using the comment box below.

Bad idea.
I have seen many examples where innocent people were teasered and killed by police in North America.
The teaser gun is unpredictable.
It is Russion roulette.
Any one who shows aggression is an easy target.
The younger age group and the mentally ill are easy targets.
Good luck if you think this is an innocent wapon.
Perhaps the minister can volunteer and let us know what the experience , being teasered feels like.

terrible idea. tasers can kill. taser guns have deadly force.

perhaps the minister has an offer from a taser maker.

The taser-gun just begs to be abused. Cops will only be too happy to oblige. Taser guns not only torture they can kill too. In the last 10 years 500 Americans have died from being taser-gunned (source: Al Jazeera).

this is insane! read all the recent articles and watch the youtube films about the NL police losing control and kicking the crap out of a drunk guy who is completely harmless or bashing in a DJ's face because he smart mouths them or taking the Iphone from someone's hands and cursing them while they document the police's crazy unprofessional irratic and often violent behavior - then tell me that they should all get tazers. completely crazy idea. many of them are already nearly unfit to serve the public as police officers (yes I said 'serve').

Given the average agents propensity to over react to even the smallest misdimeanour this is going to cause no end of fun. Have they ever tried to taser someone on a bike that doesn't want to stop? This will be like a Police Academy movie. Seriously, shame on Opstelten for even suggesting such a move.

Tasers are sold by a single company - Taser international. The attempt to make such a big purchase smells like corruption to me.

Perhaps they ought to choose a minister with a heart condition and seewhat happens when they suffer high voltage electricity.
Tasers are incorrectly sold as non-lethal and are used as such. In practice these kill, or are sometimes used as a form of punishment in an already incapacitate subject.
Police think twice about firing a gun

Yet another grand idea by Ivo Opstelten! Applause, applause! First he forced the "wietpass" down our throats - which turned out to be a total catastrophe and now he comes up with yet another "brilliant" plan to waste tax payers money.Tazers are a serious health hazard; many people have already been killed by overzealous police using these devices. Anyone with a weak heart is in potential danger. When will Opstelten finally become Oprotten and be replaced by someone who's up to the job and has a positive attitude towards humanity?

Remember a few years ago when the Justice minister thought tear gas was the answer for everything?

It only took gassing everyone converging on the Amsterdam CS after Queens Day to change public opinion...

(Give all police officers the Tazer) Could not agree more, they should be the first guinea pigs for this latest brilliant idea. Anyway, what's a few casualties, we are already euthanizing our mentally ill, I doubt a few casualties will trouble the conciousness of our political elite?

As far as I know Tasers have never been sold as "non-lethal" but rather "less lethal" and to be honest they may on occasions result in death but I'd rather be Tased than have a couple of 9mm rounds put in me.

You have about the same chance of dying from a taser, as you would have from a gunshot wound :)

Lol, people waiting years on death-row in the US for an execution date for electrocution in a nasty looking chair..need I say more :P ??

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taser

(I would not like to end up being tasered & dead for disagreeing with a police officer, would you??!!

There are still a few countries that will amputate your hand/s if you get caught stealing a loaf of bread, nice eh?

@Ivo Opstelten: you belong in one of those countries..and take your buddy Leers with you please, anyone agree? :D

As usual we have people posting things on here as though they are facts. The electric chair is not used in the US, except for Vermont and then only for 'treason', which never happens. It is option in a small number of States if the convicted CHOOSES it over lethal injection. (and only 2/3 of States have the death penalty). Comparing a Taser is ridiculous, BUT there are more taser related deaths per year than executions so someone playing with stats can make the argument it is more deadly. :)
