Companies to be allowed to issue visas to foreign staff

Thursday 06 September 2012

Companies with a good reputation which employ foreign staff are to be given access to immigration service systems so they can organise visas directly, immigration minister Gerd Leers said on Thursday.

'I am prepared to give companies which perform well the opportunity to write out their own visas by logging into the system,' Leers told BNR radio.

The visas could be given to non-EU nationals who meet standard criteria, such as a salary of at least €50,000.

Paperwork

The companies can save a lot of paperwork, 'but must accept the consequences if they bring in someone without the proper papers or who turns out to be a criminal,' the minister said.

Companies which do break the rules will face fines and loss of their preferred supplier status, the minister said.

The new system is due to come into effect next year.

Is this a wise move? Have your say using the comment form below.

the current system was already fast enough compared to let's say, US.

Isn't this already in effect for companies wanting to hire Highly Skilled Migrants? Firms that are officially registered and approved by the IND are eligible for a "fast-track process" of hiring non-EU nationals, provided they meet the criteria (the absurd €50,000 salary requirement included)

Is M. Leers trying to take credit for something that is already in effect? Shame on you!

Visa issuing by trusted companies is a good idea so long as the Immigration Service stays involved in the process with random checks and the staff that issue the visas in the company do an 'immigration rules course' and become certified. Generally if all the correct paperwork is supplied it is only a matter of rubberstamping.

Are you people nuts??? You are opening the door wide open for abuse! Then you wonder why you have so many unemployed foreigners living off the state in your country! I know times are tough but this is ridiculous!

Please educate your reporters: visum is enkelvoud, visa is meervoud en visas is nonsense.

Editor's note: In English we use visa and visas.

This is not wise, how about forcing companies to train Dutch people?

By phil | 7 September 2012 11:15 AM

not a good move. many companies in other countries used a kickback to satisfy the salary restriction to employ foreigners. this will result more locals unable to gain good employment.

Well said Rene. Guess who needs educating?

By jaycee | 7 September 2012 4:12 PM

Rene, can you please provide us a link to any official government website in English that uses the words visum and visa?

Thank you.

@Rene Caderius van Veen: Please be educated: it is Visto, and te plural is Visti (in my language). Visum/Visa/Visas is all nonsense! If you want to read Dutch then read Dutch (not Dutch news translated into English). It is rather imperialist to impose the whole world to use Dutch wording just because you are used to it. It is impolite to accuse people to be non-educated when they write English using English words. Best regards (groeten)

CW, try: http://london.usembassy.gov/visas.html
The reporters are not writing official government documentation, they are reporting news in English. They therefore use the word Visa, as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary:
