All dogs to be microchipped

Friday 14 September 2012

Dog breeders are to be required by law to have a microchip inserted in every puppy within seven weeks of their birth, ministers agreed on Friday.

The chip will include the owner’s name and address which will be stored in a data bank, according to a cabinet statement.

The aim of the plan is to try to eradicate problems in the dog breeding industry and identify the owners of dogs which have been abandoned or neglected.

Some 70% of dogs are now given a chip on a voluntary basis. The measure is likely to be implemented from 2013.

A good idea? Have your say using the comment box below.

Why not just microchip TBS'ers instead of dogs? Dogs are less dangerous than TBS'ers.

Ya right , Humans NEXT :)

Bad Idea. Human beings will be next. Someone will get the idea to implant children to keep track of them and then it will be mandatory for everyone to be chipped and tracked.

Dr. Katherine Albrecht of Harvard University's research shows that some pets injected/implanted with microchips have a very bad reaction to the chips, even developing tumors directly around the implanted chip. Some of her research is shown on her site chipmenotdotcom. As she says, it is not just a statistic when it is your pet that develops cancer from RFID types of chips.

I think it's a very good idea. My dog was chiped when I got her and I know if she gets lost that Í'll get her back :)

Are we a stones throw away for the same law to apply to human babies?

'Glad it reads 'dogs', & not people..

As a dog owner I think its a good rule, and there should be stricter rules on being able to have a dog. The people I hate the most in this country are fellow dog owners. I can't believe the amount of dog shit in my neighbourhood, yet there are shit bins everywhere. I am tired of being attacked by unleashed dogs in the streets at least once a day. Dog ownership needs to be strictly controlled.

How predictable, 5 out of 8 comments are a slippery slope.

Haha, 'humans will be next" pffft....
This is a good rule, it will make the people think again before ditching them in the woods.

This will solve nothing as only registered responsible dog breeders will get their pups chipped.
