Olympics: Vos and Bosch disappoint, Van Rijsselberghe still on course for gold

Marianne Vos, who gave the Netherlands its only gold medal so far, could only manage 16th place in Wednesday's individual women's time trial.

The cyclist never really found her form in the 29-kilometre sprint at Hampton Court. The American Kristin Armstrong took gold, the German Judith Arndt won silver and the Russian Olga Zabalinskaya was in bronze position.

Edith Bosch, tipped for gold in the judo and already winner of a silver and bronze Olympic medal, was beaten by the German Kerstin Thiele in the quarter-finals at the OIympic Park in London. However, she still has a chance to win bronze.

High hopes

Bas Verwijlen, tipped by Sports Illustrated to become Olympic champion in fencing, failed to get past the German Joerg Fiedler in the second round. He was beaten 15-8.

The Dutch men's eight lost out in the final at Eton Dorney to the British team who stayed ahead by just 0.54 seconds to take the bronze medal. Germany won gold and Canada took silver.

Good news

The Dutch men's field hockey team won their second match of the championships, beating Belgium 3-1. This puts them top of their group on six points.

Surfer Dorian van Rijsselberghe is still ahead of the rest in the RS:X class after two more heats. The 23-year-old is now seven points ahead of second-placed Toni Wilhelm from Germany.

The Netherlands is in 16th place on the medal table with one gold and one silver.
