Kromowidjojo wins gold in 50m freestyle, completing double
Saturday 04 August 2012
Ranomi Kromowidjojo took her second gold medal of the Olympics in London on Saturday evening, winning the 50 metres freestyle swimming event in a new Olympic record of 24.05.
Team mate Marleen Veldhuis took bronze in her last race. Veldhuis, 33, is retiring after the games. Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus took silver.
Kromowidjojo is only the third swimmer in Olympic history to win gold in both events. East Germany's Kristin Otto took the double in 1988 and fellow Dutch woman Inge de Bruijn did the same in 2000.
Kromowidjojo and Veldhuis were both part of the team which took the silver medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay earlier in the games.
