First Airbus A380 lands at Schiphol airport

Wednesday 01 August 2012

The first commercial flight of the Airbus A380 is expected to land at Amsterdam Schiphol airport on Wednesday afternoon at 13.30.

The Emirates flight from Dubai carries 427 passengers and a crew of 24.

Over the past few months, Schiphol has adapted its boarding bridges and gates to takethe 70 metre long aircraft with two passenger decks and a full capacity of 500 travellers.

Emirates plans to fly a daily service between Amsterdam and Dubai which is growing in popularity with holidaymakers and is a convenient transfer hub to Africa and Asia.

The airline is in competition with KLM which has Schiphol as its home base in the Netherlands. Malaysia Airlines and China Southern are also planning to fly the A380 from Schiphol, according to Trouw.

KLM has no plans at present to introduce the Airbus into its fleet of Boeing 747s, a spokesman told the paper.

I have flown on a A380 several times from CDG to JNB and I liked it. However, I think KLM is correct in holding this decision if it does not make sense economically for the airline.

CDG? JNB? Am I expected to know what that is like Boom roos vis??

Anyway, as it happens I will be flying from Dubai to Schiphol in December. I couldn't care less what the brand of the airplane is, as long as it takes me to my destination safely. And with enough leg space. And with some good movies. If that new giant Airbus has this, I'm happy.

By the way, the choice of food at Emirates is great.

I was on that flight and it was by far the smoothest most comfortable flight ive ever had.. nothing like having a drink at a fancy bar at 39,000 ft

I wonder if you'll start seeing airlines flying 380's to countries like the US only 3-4 times a week instead of smaller planes that may fly every day. More passengers on one flight, reducing the need for as many airplanes, crews, flight hours on planes etc. Less convenient for passengers, but since when have airlines ever cared about that?

It would make sense to fly larger planes fewer times a week for lower C02 output and less noise around airports as well.

Martin: a hint: JNB and CDG are not train stations. Just before you ask, KLM is not a ship company.
