Zeeland has third lowest jobless rate in EuropeWednesday 04 July 2012 The southern Dutch province of Zeeland has an unemployment rate of just 2.7%, the third lowest in Europe, according to research by the European statistics agency Eurostat. Two Austrian provinces, Salzburg and Tirol have a lower jobless rate at just 2.5%. The province of Utrecht has one of the lowest youth unemployment rates in Europe at 6.2%. Three German states and one Austrian province have fewer youngsters out of work. Earlier this week, Eurostat said the Dutch unemployment rate is 5.1%, the second lowest in the EU, behind Austria (4.1%). The average unemployment rate throughout the EU is 11.1% - or 17.5 million people. Spain has the highest jobless total at nearly 25% while the Greek rate rose to almost 22% over the past year, Eurostat says. Is Zeeland the place to find work? Has any research been done as to why it is so low? Is it because Zeeland is a farming/tourism province with a lot of seasonal work? Is it because it is more traditional with predominantly stay at home mums? Is it because it is so boring that most people leave to find employment elsewhere? It would be nice to know.
By jaycee | 4 July 2012 4:59 PMThat is great that Zeeland has the 3rd lowest youth unemployment rate in Europe, some inner city areas of the UK have a youth unemployment rate of 50%, you are the envy of Europe.
By AlMorr | 4 July 2012 8:45 PMIs anyone actually surprised and/or actually been there before?! There's only about 380,000 people living there. I expect most people leave! lol
By fortuner | 5 July 2012 9:11 AMZeeland has a small population; it is full of Randstad/Antwerp commuters; high level of pensioners; plenty of stay-at-home mums and part-time&seasonal work is popular.
By puntjebijpaaltje | 5 July 2012 3:31 PMThe harbors of Kanaalzone near Terneuzen and Sloegebied near Vlissingen are big industrial areas with lots of factories.
By pepe | 5 July 2012 7:22 PMJust because a place has a small jobless rate doesn't mean it has jobs. Either people have a job, aren't looking for one, or have relocated for a job...
By CW | 5 July 2012 7:30 PMThe reason Zeeland is so successful is that it's just sheep, cows, and hotels/camping for German tourists. And German tourists are the only ones spending this year :D
By osita | 5 July 2012 8:22 PMOf course its the lowest jobless rate in Europe, they left to other province to look for jobs .... simple! Why don't you take North Pole as an example...there's no job there, therefore the lowest jobless rate...
By grahamhancockfan | 6 July 2012 3:13 PMHopefully it will remain that way for the foreseeable future and the residents will be willing to welcome people who are out of work to benefit from their prosperity. I'm sure the evidence will speak for itself. The people of Zeeland are hospitable and unselfish.
