State vaccine producer sold to Indian production giant SII

The production department of the state-owned vaccine maker NVI, which makes products for national and international vaccination programmes, has been sold to the Serum Institute of India for €32m, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Monday.

The research and distribution tasks currently carried out by the NVI will be transferred to the public health institute RIVM, and employment levels will be maintained, the paper says.
The ministry says the unit has been unprofitable for years. The decision to sell it was made in 2009 because of the high cost of meeting increasingly strict safety guidelines.
The company’s new Indian owner is the world’s biggest producer of measles, diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough vaccines, the NRC reported.
