Some 5,000 calls a month have been made to the special animal hotline set up by the government earlier this year.

This is double the amount of reports made about abused or neglected animals before the 144 hotline existed, the AD reports.

However, the government has already agreed to abandon plans to set up a special force of 5,000 police officers trained to deal with animal abuse.
