Class sizes grow as number of teachers falls

Class numbers are growing in primary and secondary schools, with numbers up by 4% on 2011, junior education minister Halbe Zijlstra told parliament in a briefing on Tuesday.

The number of pupils in each class has fallen, but the number of teachers is falling even faster, Zijlstra said.
Earlier this year, the hbo college council said the number of students applying for a place at teacher training college (pabo) was down almost 11% on last year.
A spokesman for the council said this was unsurprising because entrance standards had been increased and government cuts had reduced career opportunities in the education sector.
Commenting on Zijlstra’s briefing, the teaching union AOb said it sees the situation worsening in the future because of the drop in teacher training students.
