Belgian newspaper group eyes KPN’s BASE subsidiary

Belgian newspaper group Persgroep, which owns Dutch papers Het Parool, AD, Trouw and the Volkskrant, is a potential bidder for KPN’s Belgian telecoms arm BASE, according to Belgian paper De Tijd.

The paper says the Pergroep wants to expand its telecom activities and already works together with BASE in a number of areas.
KPN put its budget mobile telecom unit up for sale earlier this year in an effort to realise more shareholder value and head off a challenge from Mexican telecoms firm América Móvil. A number of private equity firms are also interested in bidding, Nos television reports.
