Traffic jams at a 12-year low

Friday 01 June 2012

Traffic congestion in the Netherlands was lower than it has been since 2000 over the first four months of this year, transport minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen told parliament on Friday.

In total, congestion is down 5.6% on the same period last year. Improvements to the A4 near Leiderdorp, the A74 by Venlo and A2 round Utrecht are the main reasons for the decline in jams, the minister said.

Nevertheless, more action needs to be taken, the minister said. 'It is essential for our economy that accessibility is optimal. We have to keep working hard at this over the coming years,' she said in a statement.

The number of deaths in traffic accidents on main roads also fell from 81 in 2010 to 67 last year.

Great news! In other paper, we can also read traffic is at an all-time record, having recovered from the crisis slump in 2009.

They need to come with new plans to widening highways and building new ones. For instance, completing A44 all the way to Den Haag

The traffic in The Netherlands has never seemed bad in my opinion. Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Seattle, Chicago, San Francisco... that's what traffic looks like.

They should bring back the Zonderloos Zondag..no cars on the road on Sunday and that means anything with a motor like the good old days..

@Dinny: that is plain stupid. Weekends is the only period most families can travel somewhere together, especially to places where cars are essential like the countryside, lakes in Friesland etc.

Forbidding use of cars would stuck people in their neighborhoods...

Dinny: I agree with your comment and certainly would never ever call anyone's opinion on here 'plain stupid' directly to them. I am surprised this is permitted to be honest. I also miss the auto-free Sundays just as you do and many other people. Thanks for your comment, I hope you will continue to participate here.

We need less highways, and more transit. This isn't Texas, this is Holland. In 5 years these lanes will be filled up, then what?
