Tilburg prison too full and too violent, says report

Tilburg prison is too full and this leads to unacceptable levels of violence, the European anti-torture committee said in a report published on Tuesday.

The overcrowding leads to some cells housing eight prisoners, says the report, quoted in the Telegraaf.
The tension is further ratcheted up because prisoners of very different backgrounds are put in the same cell. ‘They are long and short-term detainees, young and old, of various nationalities and with different cultures, religions and dietary needs,’ say the researchers.
Education
The researchers want the prison to house fewer prisoners per cell, says the Telegraaf.
They also say Tilburg prison gives detainees little possibilities for education or learning a trade. However, they are positive about the behaviour of the prison guards although there is sometimes a language barrier between them and their charges.
Tilburg often takes Belgian prisoners because Belgium has too few cells.
