The Netherlands calls for probe into family reunion fraud

The Netherlands is one of the signatories to a letter to European home affairs commissioner Cecelia Malmström calling on her to set up of a group of experts to look into possible fraud involving family reunions and marriages of convenience, the Telegraaf reports on Monday.

The confidential letter has also been signed by Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Finland and Britain, the paper says.
Sources in The Hague state immigration minister Gerd Leers believes independent figures will convince Brussels to tighten up the rules, the paper says.
Age limit
In particular, the Netherlands wants to set an age limit of 24 on bringing in a foreign partner and salary requirements of 120% of the minimum wage.
It is unclear from the Telegraaf report if the Netherlands is the driving force behind the letter. Malmström is in the Netherlands on Tuesday and is expected to meet Leers then.
Should Brussels agree to the request, pressure is likely to increase on the Netherlands to give up its opposition to Romanian and Bulgarian accession to the Schengen open border agreement, the paper says.
