Private health and safety firm will destroy medical files

The private health and safety firm at the centre of a storm about the holding of medical information said on Monday afternoon it will destroy all its old files.

VerzuimReductie says it will start destroying the thousands of files it has collected since the company started eight years ago, reports website nu.nl.
‘What employers do with this information is up to them, but we will destory the old files starting in July,’ said a spokesman, adding this was decided before the general workers union FNV Bondgenoten called for the move earlier on Monday.
VerzuimReductie is the largest of the private firms which monitor health and safety, follow up on sick workers and help get them back to work on behalf of their client companies.
A report on the current affairs tv show Zembla said confidential medical information was being given to VerzuimReductie.
Earlier on Monday FNV Bondgenoten called for the information to be destroyed following research among their members. Nearly 1,500 responded, just under half of which said their medical information was handed to VerzuimReductie by their employer.
