Opta must change telephony pricing rules, demands EU Commission

Digital agenda commissioner Neelie Kroes is demanding that telecom watchdog Opta changes its rule on pricing or removes it altogether.

Opta was following European guidelines which state only direct costs can be charge. However, after a challenge by the telephony industry and a court ruling, it was obliged to adjust the rule so indirect costs can also be charged to the customer.
Kroes has been asking Opta to change the rule for months but, after a meeting on Wednesday, has now issued a demand, reports the Volkskrant.
Opta reacted by saying it is bound by the Dutch court ruling. ‘Just like the European Commission, we too would like to see lower tariffs,’ a spokesman told the paper.
