MPs oppose get tough policy on home energy labels

Cabinet plans to halt housing transactions unless the property has a formal energy label go too far, according to a majority of MPs.

Parliament will debate the cabinet plans to get tough on home owners without the energy label later today.
Under EU law, all homes should have a certificate stating how energy efficient they are. The rule has been widely flouted in the Netherlands and ministers now want to ban notaries from proceeding with housing transactions unless the property has a certificate.
Interference
‘And this at a time when so few houses are being sold,’ Betty de Boer from the ruling VVD is quoted as saying by news agency ANP. ‘Why is the EU interfering? All these extra silly rules get in the way of home owners and hike the costs.’
De Boer and her CDA colleague Bas Jan have submitted an amendment which would allow an energy label to be determined on the basis of when the property was built and if it has been renovated.
At the moment, home owners are supposed to call in specialist advisory firms to calculate their energy efficiency, but this can cost hundreds of euros.
