Holland drops three places on 'peaceful nation' list

Tuesday 12 June 2012

The Netherlands dropped three places on the latest Global Peace Index to 28th, reports the Volkskrant on Tuesday.

Since the index was first published in 2007, the Netherlands has dropped eight places.

The Global Peace Index is published annually by a panel of experts and gives an indication of the safety and harmony in most of the world's countries.

Points are given for a number of developments, such as the number of armed conflicts, but also for the amount of crime, weapons export and the size of the armed forces.

Singapore, Malaya and Taiwan rank above the Netherlands in the list.

Oh, it's only because of the Euro.

But then Holland goes up 10 places in the list rank as the rudest people.

By Holly | June 12, 2012 11:19 AM

The more immigration we have the more place we will drop, crime rates increase as the percentage of people born overseas increases, this is fact. Especially when political correctness doesn't let us choose who we let in from fear of being labelled racist.

By Phil | June 12, 2012 12:41 PM

interestingly, if you look at the different indicators, NL is low on all except weapons export (where is scores 5, the highest)

By the _expat | June 12, 2012 1:18 PM

Correction please: its Malaysia, not Malaya.

By Azz | June 12, 2012 1:43 PM

It is because of the weapons export.

@Phil, You are becoming a cliche of yourself and highly predictable. Please site sources if you are going to say that something is a fact like "crime rates increase as the percentage of people born overseas increases". If you think it is political correctness in Holland that is the problem, you really need to get out more. Holland is brutally not PC in almost every way I can think of. Maybe it's about time the Dutch look into the mirror at their own problems, and stop fobbing them off on others all of the time and take some responsibility for their own actions. I've never experienced such a self-imposed head in the sand culture as in Holland.

So the Netherlands has a very, very low violent crime rate that has dropped considerably over the last decade, but the reason for the country moving up in this ranking is an increase in violent crime by immigrants? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate) If he would bother to read the report he would know it is because of Dutch weapons exports; the Dutch are exporting the tools of violence to those very immigrant lands. But of course Phil doesn't read the report because he's just another muddle-headed racist who is incapable of any meaningful analysis of data. Stop blaming immigrants for your failed existance, Phil.

By Spence | June 12, 2012 4:07 PM

@Phil - obviously you have no fear of being labelled a racist. Do you think at all before you speak, or type?
As others have pointed out, the Netherlands can thank its it relatively low position largely to weapons export and possibly its ill-fated and ill-thought out police training mission in Afghanistan.
All these lists are bloody silly anyway. But not as silly as Phil:-)

By Garry | June 12, 2012 4:31 PM

Phil, it has nothing to do with this "so-called" political correctness that we don't label all immigrants "criminals". It has everything to with the facts that:

1. they AREN'T all criminals
2. many of us are ALSO immigrants, so you are insulting US
3. if people talked about YOU the way you talk about immigrants, assuming the worst, refusing to give you a break because you're "obviously" a troublemaker, a job stealer, a criminal, I doubt you'd be nice back. Be honest.

WHY do you come here -- to a news site geared to people from another country -- to bash us??? It's like you have NO idea who read and post here!! Wake UP!

By CW | June 12, 2012 4:45 PM

Not surprised Phil is blaming this and all the countrys problems on Immigrants.Dn sesm to be his outlet for his anti immigrant rants.Id their ever bad news about Holland its got to be the immigrants Phil..no doubt he will blame them for the football results next.

By jason buttle | June 12, 2012 4:58 PM

@ Phil
Nonsense. Australia is 6 places above The Netherlands on this list and 1 in 4 people living in Australia were not born there.

As 'the_expat' noted, it is largely weapons exports and military actions which drop The Netherlands down a bit.

At least check the study before making these kind of of unfounded populist statements.

By Craig | June 12, 2012 5:24 PM

indeed most of it appears to the result of arms exports. it also appears, to me anyway, that making money on weapons is more important to the Dutch than being higher on the peaceful nations list. this is a choice. Now that it is in print for the Dutch to see and think about it, do you think the choice will change?

By Bill | June 12, 2012 6:14 PM

In my opinion, this is even more concrete evidence that this country is going backwards. Does NL want to be known for weapons export and zillions of euros being spent on the JSF fighter jet? I come from the US, the country the Dutch sometimes accuse of being a war mongering culture and a 'country wanting to rule the world' - and they are often right. So how does this make sense then?

By Bill | June 12, 2012 6:26 PM

@Phil: Way to blame all problems on foreigners. There are no Dutch criminals, right? Immigration can be done right, just look to Canada for answers. I wish you would quit with your blanket, negative statements. But that's just wishful thinking on my part.

By Stupid | June 12, 2012 6:46 PM

Phil, you cannot use the sweeping sterotyping of blaming always foreigners. it is a dozen if not more reasons that equal the cause, not to mention the weapon export. as the item pointed out, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore are higher and the later two with migrant 'issues'.

By DC | June 13, 2012 1:14 AM

Well, Dutch banks, such as ING and Rabobank, don't stay behind either on financing the weapon industry abroad.

By JF | June 13, 2012 7:35 AM

how baffling!Bring in oppressive male dominated migrants, reproduce at will but still go down on the list?Incredible.

By lomia | June 13, 2012 8:00 AM

@phil: what you say is nonsense! Please check the data (see the website mentioned in pepe's comment). The reason NL dropped is because of the weapons export not crime. Iceland is the most peaceful (not surprisingly), and the indicators for "homicides","jailed population" and "perceived criminality in society" are identical.(2,1,1)

By the_expat | June 13, 2012 8:40 AM

Holland drops in the rank as the country get more controlled and influenced by zionists.

By Chen | June 13, 2012 9:05 AM

Oh, look at this http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1a/Global_Peace_Index_2011.png

USA started a lot of wars for the past 10 years and it's green, and some other countries who haven't had any wars in ages are red.

By rick d. | June 13, 2012 10:48 AM

@Rick D. What a typically ignorant statement. Most people in the US just want out of the UN so we don't have to keep fighting their wars, and policing the world since NO ONE ELSE HAS THE WILL! Already we are hearing that the US should do 'more' in regards to Syria. They are damned if they do, and damned if they don't. Part of me would like for the US to just stay out of international politics and allow it to play itself out.

By DH | June 14, 2012 2:45 PM

@DH - Let the US rest and I am sure that the world will live peacfully everafter. Who invented Taliban, supporting Zionism, using Chemical weapons (ex: in Falluja, Iraq 2004), supported the war in Somalia and left the country to decay, Inventing the most mass destructive weapons in Human history, supported Moubarak in Eygpt, supporting Saudi Arabi and all other GCC countries (remarkable countries for their human rights record)... the list goes on and on for ever. And you say that the US wants world peace. Please we beg you to throw the towel and rest if so...

By Karido | June 15, 2012 10:52 AM

Australia will soon have its own problems as more and more Greeks are moving to Australia leaving Greece behind in search of jobs. All countries change their economic structure when they allow a large inflow of immigrants to settle in their country. This is also one of Spain's major problem allowing many Romanian immigrants there.
