First KLM flight on cooking oil heads to Rio

The first KLM flight fuelled by biofuel made from used cooking oil took off from Amsterdam Schiphol airport on Tuesday afternoon, carrying junior environment minister Joop Atsma to the climate change summit in Rio.

The Dutch airline began test flights using biofuels in 2009. The biokerosene used for testing had the same technical specifications as traditional kerosene and did not require any adjustments to the aircraft engines.
The first plane to use the fuel is the government’s aircraft.
KLM CEO Camiel Eurlings told the Telegraaf the airline has found a number of large multi-nationals as sponsors and that the World Fund for Nature supports the move.
Before boarding his flight, Atsma said the Dutch government is considering sponsoring KLM biofuel flights, the paper says.
