Dutch football team to be rejuvenated, drop older stars

Tuesday 26 June 2012

National football coach Bert van Marwijk has told the football association KNVB he wants to rejuvenate the Dutch team by dropping a number of older players and bringing in younger players ready for the World Cup qualifiers which begin in September.

The star players being dropped are Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Rafael van der Vaart, Joris Mathijsen, Khalid Boulahrouz and John Heitinga, reports the Telegraaf. Some of them came in for bitter criticism following the team's failure to reach the European Cup quarter finals earlier this month.

According to the paper, Van Marwijk is also considering whether or not to keep Dirk Juyt.

Captain Mark van Bommel has already declared he is not available to play for his country.

Who would you like to see in the new-look team? Let us know by using the comment form below.

I think the KNVB should drop van Marwijk.

Boulahrouz, Mathijsen and Kuyt should leave. They are fitting for 'old stars'. But VdV and Huntelaar are not really too old. They just have a discord with bondscoach. Oranje needs them and Van Marwijk'd rather find the way to deal with them

Bert van Marwijk should be sacked if he can't control his players ego and actaully get them to play as a team rather than individuals then he shoud go.This is the first time in long period the Dutch had a tough group and what we seen was really awful.

Wouldn't it make more sense to begin by dropping Van Marwijk?

Robben should also be dropped unless Van Marwijk can teach him to pass the ball to his teammates.
He seems to have forgotten that it's a team sport, not Arjen Robben + ten!

Dirk Kuyt not Juyt.

Bert could be right. This is what happened to the successfull French teams of 84 and 98

I would drop van der wiel.

I have been a Dutch football fun for over 16 years, been through a lot of highs and lows, seen some of the best football played by Dutch players and also painful moments. Interesting coach Bert van has contributed to both my joys and pain, however today football is dynamic, ever changing, new players cropping and style of play, it's makes even the best team to ramble like we did. My suggest lets reaccess and rebuild our team, no need for a new coach. Changing into new clothes doesn't necessary mean you are clean.

just say goodbye to Robben and van Persie,
players that have performed badly for some time now and who think they are top players. (the truth is they are not).
they are the real ego's, get rid of them.

I agree with the sentiment, but his choices seem bizarre to me.

Drop Robben, he is the most egoistic player of the team and thinks far too much of himself.

It seems like Huntelaar and van der Vaart are being paid back for airing their views. Meanwhile Robben and others get a pass for their selfish, lackluster play. Best of luck to the players who have been wrongly scapegoated after the EK debacle, and good luck to the newcomers in dealing with a coach who does not take on board anything he does not want to hear.

After careful consideration (including my favoured dropping of Van Marwijk, Robben,Van Persie, Affalay, Van der Wiel, Heitinga, Stuntelaar, Kuyt,Van Bommel,De Jong L.& N., Boularhouz) the real option I would like to see is the old fashioned Dutch "Totaal Voetbal" game that resulted in some beautiful football moments, instead of this ugly, result driven "Van Marwijk-approach" that two years ago culminated in the all-time low of "karate-kick defence".
