Dutch backpacker faces long wait for Australian car crash trial

A Dutch backpacker who reportedly caused a fatal car accident while touring Australia has been ordered to remain in the country pending a legal case – which could take up to a year, Nos television reports.

Linda Huiskamp, 26, was involved in a serious car crash in April in which another Dutch woman died. Huiskamp sustained a collapsed lung, broken ribs and a broken leg in the accident, which took place in western Australia.
Nos says local legislation means that all fatal car crashes in western Australia are taken to court, and Huiskamp faces a maximum jail term of 10 years.
But a shortage of court time means the case may take up to a year to be heard. This led Huiskamp to go to court herself, asking to be allowed to wait for the trial in the Netherlands.
Huiskamp is out on bail and it is not clear what will happen to her now, Nos says.
