A quarter of Amsterdam’s Top 600 young crooks are in jail

Just over one quarter of the 600 persistent young criminals targeted by Amsterdam police and other officials for extra attention are currently behind bars, mayor Eberhard van der Laan has told the city council.

Last year, Amsterdam police, justice ministry officials and city council staff drew up a list of 600 persistent trouble makers and criminals, all of whom have been arrested at least five times over the past five years.
Police and councils hope a targeted approach, involving fast-track trials, individual youth workers, and possibly preventative detention, will keep them on the straight and narrow.
Since the project started last year, two-thirds of the target list have been arrested at least once, the mayor said.
