251 unborn babies put under supervision orders last year
Friday 08 June 2012
Officials put 251 unborn babies under formal supervision last year, the child protection council has confirmed.
Unborn babies can be put on the at-risk register from 24 weeks following concerns from doctors, midwives and social workers. All registrations have to be approved in court.
'If parents cannot offer a safe place for their baby, they have to be prepared for the fact that their child may be removed as soon as it is born,' a council spokesman told news agency ANP.
Last year's total is almost double the number of protection orders placed on unborn babies in 2009. In total, some 180,000 babies are born in the Netherlands every year.

Uhhh - that looks at me quite totalitarian!
By Kalin Anguelov | 8 June 2012 9:44 AMThis is a step in the right direction. Something has to be done about pregnant women who smoke, for example. The damage that happens in the womb has the biggest repercussions.
By C. Garcia | 9 June 2012 10:10 AMSome wombs aren't safe at all either. It's called a woman's choice.
By Ann | 10 June 2012 5:05 AMSociety is not safe either. Note the number of children damaged and killed in foster care. We should not be judging when we know nothing of the circumstances.
