Thousands will lose jobs if road projects are halted

Some 3,600 people will lose their jobs over the next two years if the government presses ahead with a partial freeze on new road projects.

The figures, based on a number of different scenarios, are contained in a report for the transport ministry commissioned before the government fell.
This means the report does not take into account the cut in spending on infrastructure agreed in the austerity package finalised this week.
A number of major road projects may not now go ahead because of the collapse of the coalition alliance. The Netherlands will elect a new government in September.
