MPs call for answers on Holland's dubious phone tapping record

Wednesday 23 May 2012

MPs are to debate the fact that one in 1,000 Dutch telephones is tapped with justice minister Ivo Opstelten.

Parties from across the political spectrum backed calls for the debate following the publication of a justice ministry report which shows Dutch police remain far more likely than their colleagues in neighbouring countries to tap crime suspects' telephones.

Some 22,000 telephone taps are placed a year, or one in 1,000 phone connections, researchers at the ministry's WODC institute say. Family and friends of suspects are also liable to have their phones tapped.

At the same time, telephone taps rarely produce evidence of crimes, partly because criminals are aware they are being tapped and partly because the communication shifts to internet, the WODC report says.

The Netherlands is said repeatedly to authorise more phone taps than any other country in the world.

1984 was meant to be a warning not a guide book for governments to spy on the populayion.

I think a better title for this article would be: The Netherlands still leads the way in violating people's (privacy) rights. Is this something that the Dutch are proud of? weird very weird.

Hi Jason. Did you know the original title of the book was 1948?
The publishers forced the change.

Haha, Jason, great comment. Sad but true.

It's just so cold war it's laughable. Telephone tapping! Really!?

Problem is that most smart criminals see using Skype or Blackberry messenger. These methods are encrypted and cannot be tapped.
