The Netherlands’ only nuclear power station meets EU standards

The Netherlands’ only nuclear power station – the Borssele plant in Zeeland – meets EU safety standards by a wide margin, economic affairs minister Maxime Verhagen told MPs in a briefing on Tuesday.

The EU decided last year to assess nuclear plant safety standards in hypothetical disaster situations, such as an earthquake, following the Japanese disaster at Fukushima.
European experts are ‘positive’ about the outcome of a stress test on Borssele and think the test offers a ‘realistic picture of the possible consequences of extreme external events,’ the minister said.
The Dutch results will be included in a survey of all Europe’s nuclear power stations to be published in June.
