Rabobank gets tough on direct debit card fraud

Most Rabobank account holders will no longer be able to use their direct debit cards outside Europe unless they make a formal request to do so, the bank said in a press release on Saturday.

By stopping pin cards working outside Europe, the bank hopes to reduce the number of ‘skimming’ incidents – by which direct debit and credit card information is stolen during an ordinary transaction.
Last year, some 24,000 Rabobank customers had money taken from their accounts after their cards had been skimmed. The accounts are often accessed from cash point machines outside Europe.
Business cards and cards which have been used outside Europe in the past two years will remain ‘on’, Rabobank said.
