Politicians should stay away from the European championships say MPs

No officials from the Netherlands should attend any football matches in the Ukraine during the European championships in June, a majority of MPs told sports minister Edith Schippers and foreign minister Uri Rosenthal on Monday.

They are concerned about the treatment of former prime minister Yulia Tymoschenko, who is serving seven years in prison for abuse of office. Tymoschenko has accused her jailers of physical abuse and is currently on hunger strike.
MPs from the Christian Democrat, Labour, Socialist and liberal D66 parties told Schippers no one should visit the Ukraine until Tymoschenko’s situation improves, according to press reports.
They want the government to follow the example of EU president José Manuel Barroso who says he will not be attending any matches in the Ukraine.
